The clematis 'Paul Farges' aka Summer Snow surprised me with its flowers in October when most of the leaves are already falling. This is a Vitalba group clematis with small white flowers. I planted it this summer to climb in the Snowy Mespilus which blossoms with thousands of small white flowers in May. This summer also marked my growing interest in clematises. Sofianlehto garden center has the widest variety of clematises in Finland thanks to its owner Mr Börje Fri who is a charming older gentleman. I got to visit him twice this summer because my daughter is an eager soccer player and she had tournaments near the nursery. And the additions to my own collection this year: 'Albina Plena' from the Alpina group and 'Little Butterfly' and 'Columella' from the Atragene group.
These are the delicate seed heads of the fragrant Bush Clematis Clematis recta. Its flowers resemble those of the Manchurian Clematis.
These two pictures are my favorite clematises. Above is the Manchurian Clematis climbing in the iron archway. Its foamy flowers are an irresistible sight in June-July. I planted my three plants bought at Sofianlehto garden center in summer 2008, and they have thrived even though the spot is half shade-shade with rather meager soil.
